Days 2 - 7: Trevi
The medieval hilltop town of Trevi is the ideal base from where to discover the wonders of Umbria. During your stay at the heart of the town, your Tour Manager will be on hand to introduce you to the region and suggest places to dine for the two nights that you are free to dine where you wish.
Meals: breakfast / dinner (4 days) breakfast (2 days)
Todi & Orvieto
Take the short journey to Todi and have a stroll around its beautiful main square. And don’t be surprised if it looks familiar – it’s often used as a film set. A lovely 11th century cathedral and several stunning Palazzos surround the Piazza which you can take a moment to explore. Then it’s just a quick hop to Orvieto, an ancient town atop a volcanic outcrop. The town is famous for its gothic cathedral, one of Italy’s finest, and its fine, light white wine. Why not stop for a glass.
Montefalco & wine tasting
Enjoy a day of tasty treats and delicious delicacies as you travel to Montefalco, an intimate and charming medieval town overlooking the beautiful Vale of Spoleto. After a walk through the town, you can indulge in a tasting of the robust blackberry-flavoured local wines accompanied by delicious local cheese and salamis.
Assisi
Assisi is said to be the jewel of Umbria. Beneath the slopes of Mount Subasio you’ll find streets of muted pink stone buildings, crowned by the famous basilica. This ambitious building, actually two churches on top of each other, is a celebration of 13th and 14th century art, decorated with renowned frescoes by Cimabue and Giotto. You’ll also have some free time to explore Assisi itself. Wander to the Piazza del Commune for a spot of people-watching and a bite to eat in one of the cafés, or enjoy a stroll amongst the steep narrow alleys and tiny shady squares.
Perugia & olive oil press
Your exploration of Umbria comes to a beautiful end with an excursion to Perugia. Its glorious medieval main street, Via Vannucci, is regarded as one of the most attractive in Italy. You’ll find many of the town’s sights here including the cathedral, the graceful Maggiore fountain and the Collegio del Cambio – home to acclaimed frescoes by Perugino. And be sure to take home some of the delicious Perugino chocolates, Bacci, that are made in the town. They’re extremely tasty.
Spoleto (optional)
To further enhance your knowledge of Umbria, take the opportunity to visit Spoleto, a delightful hilltown best known for the Ponte delle Tori. Enjoy spectacular views of this superb medieval bridge which gracefully spans the gorge. The town also features a Roman theatre and a number of fine museums. And who can resist a visit to San Salvatore? It’s one of Italy’s oldest churches and has changed very little since the 5th century.
Day 8: Rome/UK
Transfer back to the airport in Rome for your return flight home.
