South Pacific Ocean cruises

For many of us, the South Pacific is the essence of paradise, conjuring up images of hammocks and palm trees, white sand beaches and perfect blue seas. The southern half of the world's largest ocean is studded with hundreds of these tiny paradises, many forming the island chains of Micronesia, Melanesia and Polynesia.

The best known island is perhaps Fiji, where any visit should include a diving lesson to look for coral or manta rays. Other notable islands include Ecuador's Galapagos Islands, where the giant turtles and other creatures helped Charles Darwin formulate his radical ideas on evolution.

Mainland highlights of the South Pacific include the many fascinating ruins left by the Inca culture of Peru and the natural wonder that is Australia's Great Barrier Reef.
